An Overview Of Space

The first thing to address is the title of this post. “An overview of space” is a phrase that contradicts itself because, strictly speaking, space cannot be overviewed. Space is infinite and only around 4% of it is actually observable from Earth. The light being emitted from the other 96% hasn’t even reached us yet, let alone been explored by us. Light is the fastest moving thing we know of, and light still has not reached us from those parts of the universe, so imagine how far they must be! It is hard to even comprehend or begin to think about what else may be out there, so let your imagination run wild! Are there wormholes, blackholes, aliens, or parallel universes with copies of people like you and me? We may not be around to find out, but I dearly hope we are. Therefore, this is simply an overview of the tiny fraction of space that will be explored in this blog, to say the least.

The observable universe consists of celestial bodies like planets, asteroids, comets, stars, and nebulae. Astronomy is the scientific study of these celestial bodies, and it has been of interest to humans since 30,000 BC when it began to be considered a science by the Greeks. Despite this, we’ve been staring up into the stars trying to make sense of all of it probably ever since humans could tilt their heads upwards. Our ancestors would come up with mythical stories to explain certain phenomena, and we have made major advancements since then. However, the amount of things left to discover is still almost as large as it was back then.

How much do we really know about this infinite vacuum? Honestly, not much. However, we do love to ponder upon it and we’ll keep trying to explore as much as we can. The mysteries that lie beyond our planet may be unimaginable, and the only thing we know is that we’ll keep trying to learn about them until our curiosity is quenched. This endless curiosity could even be compared to space itself; don’t you think?
